Founded in 1977 by Arne Borghegn, Borghegn Yachtdesign began as a passion project that blended a love for boat design and race sailing. Arne’s maritime journey started at Molich Shipyard, where Arne trained as a boat builder and mastered maritime craftsmanship. After earning a degree as a naval engineer, Arne joined Elsinore Shipyard in Denmark, where expertise in lines drawings laid the foundation for innovative yacht design.
In the early years, Arne’s focus was on designing smaller dinghies and sailboats. The Z21 glass fiber dinghy quickly became a favorite for fishing and leisure, with over 2,000 produced. Other notable designs from this era include the Junker 26, Naver 29, and International 10.01.
As Borghegn Yachtdesign’s reputation grew, we attracted collaborations with renowned companies such as Nordship, Luffe, Bredgaard, and Motiva. Motiva yachts, in particular, earned recognition in the long-distance sailing community for their robust steel construction and excellent sailing performance.
Our expertise in creating well-sailing vessels soon expanded beyond yachts, influencing the design of fishing boats, tourist ferries, and workboats.
In 2017, after years of collaboration, Arne’s son, Axel Borghgen, joined the board. Following Arne’s passing in 2020, Axel has continued to lead the company, honoring the legacy and commitment to quality that defines Borghegn Yachtdesign.
